Arden and the Big Bad Crib

Picture this...a peaceful Sunday morning in our home. Arden woke up her usual happy self. We played downstairs for a couple of hours and then she turned into the "i need a nap" child. She refused to relax, and sometimes when this happens, most times, really, she goes up to her crib and is out within two minutes.

Sunday was different. She whined for a bit, but we figured, it's normal and she'll settle. She stopped whining and started talking. Mama. Mama. Mommy. Mommy. Again, nothing to think twice about. Right? Wrong. Thanks to our broken coffee maker, I had to make a run to ol' faithful, Dunkin Donuts. As I am walking down our sidewalk I hear loud crying. Then I hear what sounds like D running like lightning up the stairs. Back in the house I go.

The child had decided that it would be a jim dandy idea to climb OUT of her crib. And land, of course, headfirst on the hardwood floor.

Not much of a mark on her face when it happened, but we called the pediatrician who said to just keep an eye on her...she wasn't unconscious or vomiting or anything. Also, we were to bring her in the next day. When she woke up from her nap on Sunday, her face was a bit swollen. When she woke up on Monday, she looked like a prize fighter. We made an appt first thing, and saw a nurse who basically said that she's probably fine, just to watch her. I pushed her on the point that her attitude was irritable (something that they say to watch for!) and that she'd spit up in the car. Didn't really elicit a reaction from her.

We already had an appt scheduled for her ear follow up, so we headed there and mentioned our concerns to her surgeon (ear tubes look great, btw). He said, take her back to your ped. We called and were able to get in with one of the two top NPs, one who knows her quite well thanks to all of her ear infections. She did a thorough exam, and really listened to our concerns. She said, "you know, I want to be safe, let's get a picture of the head, I'm sending you to Children's."

So off we went to Children's Hospital. Because we are delusional, we thought she was right, we'd be whisked right in, they'd take a picture, and we would go home.

How wrong we were. We spent a lot of time waiting. Arden spenting a lot of time wandering around the waiting room, we did a lot of coloring, she did a little dancing for the others that were waiting. After a bit we were taken into the back, into the hallway. Busy day in the ER. After a first look at her, the dr. wanted to have the opthalmologist take a look at her very swollen eye. Up we went to visit a nice young doctor, who fast became Arden's worst enemy. To get the best look at her eye, they had to dilate them. That, readers, is not a fun task. The child can clamp her eyes so tight that a crowbar couldn't open them. Eventually they got some of the dilating spray in, but in the end her eyes never dilated as well as they'd hoped. The attending came in and took a look and her eye looked okay (on the inside!). She was tracking the objects they were showing her, all that stuff went well.

A good hour later we were back to the ER, and into what would be our room for the next several hours. She was looked over by several doctors and a couple of nurses. She was entertained by clowns. She fussed a lot, she was hungry but was not allowed food, water, or nursing before the CT scan, because of potential competitions with the meds they were going to use to sedate her. Eventually, she fell asleep on my shoulder. She slept for a good 30 minutes, woke up, and waited. We kept hearing her CT scan was happening right away. And yet it didn't happen until 8pm. 7 hours after our arrival.

I gave her the sedation medicine, she didn't want to sleep easily on it, and fought it until she collapsed on my shoulder. And then we waited. And waited. And asked...how long will this stuff last?? Finally, we were taken to the CT room. I placed her very asleep little body on this big machine, she was none the wiser, thanks to these meds. It took about 15 minutes, they snapped several images. We were then taken into recovery to let her wake up. And then the doctor came in. "Good news, and bad news"

There is no bleeding, YAY! However, she has a skull fracture. Apparently, if one has to get a skull fracture, this is the good kind to get. It will heal on its own in the next month. Until then, we are to keep her calm. Right. Our active, the child who walks from the moment she wakes until the moment she sleeps...calm.

Overall, she's okay. She was very irritable yesterday, which is one of the reasons we were pretty sure something wasn't right. Her walk is off, she kind of sways to the left, but we are relatively certain that is because her left eye is almost swollen shut. Poor kid.

Today she is at daycare, where they have strict instructions that she is not to be on the slides, not to climb on furniture (or anything else!) for the next month. They must keep a very close eye on her.

She was a happy little girl when I dropped her off today. She walked in and kissed her little fried Isaac on the head (sorry Charlie!).

A crib tent is on order. Until then, her crib, which was at the time of the incident lowered as much as possible, is turned to face the wall. The one small side where she could get out, if she felt the need (which we hope she will not) has 5 pillows under it, covered by a fluffy down comforter.

Meantime, she goes into her crib sound asleep and we get her the moment we hear her stir. We do not trust our curious little creature to not try freedom again!

We will get a picture of the eye...we must commemorate this "milestone" -- sigh.

Do all the other parents get daily calls from daycare with incident reports????????

Yesterday she scratched her face when she was in the gross motor room. Today she fell and now has a cut under her eye. Her teacher said "she didn't really cry, she cried more when I put the ice on it." Ha, sounds like Arden.

Ever since this child started walking, she's been even more of a daredevil. Last night she tried to go up the stairs outside (yes, I was right behind her), not her hands and knees, but picking up her feet, like the grownups do.

She continues to be a very verbal child. The last 48 hours brought two new words, banana, and diaper ("di-di"). She can't quite get the p, but last night when I was distracting her during a diaper change she was repeating the word, with the same inflection I was using.

We promise to update pics soon, and I'll post her word list too!
