The Doodlebug Chronicles

March 2006

What terrible journal people we are, it's been weeks since there has been an update!! Although Dora posted pictures, so that's something :-).

Since my last post, has sprouted a tooth, and the next one is just about through. Tooth #1 broke the surface on Marh 17th.

Arden is doing splendidly. We had her 6 month baby visit today, delayed because she was sick when it was originally scheduled. Of course, she's still sick so they skipped the shots. We'll do those in a week and a half.

She is on the 90th percentile in height and weight and absolutely perfect according to her pediatrician. He said to keep doing what we are doing because it's working. :-)

Arden is sitting up like a pro these days and has almost perfected the little thing called balance. She relishes in the freedom that her walker gives her, she LOVES being mobile in that thing.

In the last month she started food -- we started off with bananas, which are still at the top of her list of faves. In the last month she's had bananas, apples, pears, avocado, rice cereal, cream of wheat, grits (she's becoming a proper southerner for future hubby Charlie), and sweet potatoes. As my mom says, Arden is going to be "an independent little soul" -- she loves to feed herself and has gotten pretty good at actually getting the food into her mouth and not her hair. I think there are a couple of pics of her with avocado on her eyebrow, a result of self feeding.

We're looking forward to lots of time outside as the weather starts to warm up. Summer can't get here soon enough, it's time to be rid of the snowsuits!

We've got a few new pictures that we'll try to post in the next couple of days.

Some Days are Harder than Others...

Today is Wednesday, which means its Arden's start of the week at daycare. Her primary teacher, whom we absolutely adore, wasn't there today, as her granddaughter has been terribly ill for several days. We have a few things we're dealing with in terms of our content with the center, but I must say I feel so comfortable leaving Arden in Gladys's charge. Well, she wasn't there today. And leaving felt different. I noticed myself taking longer to put away her bottles and food, to fill out her paperwork. It was clear that something special was missing from that room today.

When I finally managed to pry myself from the room I watched Arden through the window as I put on my shoes. She caught my eye and just grinned. I had to fight the urge to run in and grab her and keep her with me for the day. She's so incredibly wonderful, it's hard to put into words how much I love her.

Last night she was hanging out in the kitchen with me while I got dinner ready. It's one of my favorite rituals these days. I mashed up some avocado for her and she wandered over to me (via the walker) and chowed down on 1/4 of an avocado. I wiped her off and she wandered away and I went back to doing some dishes and fiddling around to get things finished with dinner. I turn around and she's on her way back to me, stops in front of me and lifts up her arms. Together we made breakfast burritos for dinner. It's amazing how adept one becomes at doing things with one arm, isn't it?

Updated this month's pictures with fun stuff from the weekend.

Saturday was just warm and divine (from a New England perspective) so we called to see if Charlie wanted to go out on a date with Arden... and Clay and Veronica were welcome to come if only to tote Charlie in the style he is accustomed to.

And of course since the weather was nice we had to include some fur kids…. so toss Lucy, Tiger and Doyle into the mix.

It goes without saying that Lucy managed to make herself appealing in a LUNCH sort of way several times during the day to the Siberians...

Lucy: “NA NA…Can’t catch me… can’t catch me.. na na na….
    Tiger & Doyle: “FAST FOOD!

Midway through the walk Charlie was asleep and Arden was protesting her jacket so we took her out and let her play in the sand. The kid just approves of dirt and things that can be squished through her fingers.

After a meandering stroll down the beach we dragged our protesting, sand incrusted, children of the canine variety to the doggy wash & go. I should have taken a picture of the pathetic sight that was Lulu... no matter...she smells better.

We made a pit stop to put the furred ones in 'bed' and topped off the night with a wonderful dinner at Cracker Barrel. Gotta love a restaurant with a diaper changing station with a light above on a dimmer switch.

Arden had her first foray into Southern cooking sucking down grits……Somehow she avoided wearing said grits, which, if you look at the new pictures, you'll find that lately she has expressed her artistic side through body painting with organic matter.

All and all a good weekend.

    Dora

Arden is in the midst of the cold that won’t end.

Today when we went for her 6 month well baby visit the ped decided that she was unwell enough not to give her the next series of vaccinations.

Which suits me just fine because I can’t stand watching her get shots, a fact that fascinates me since I can give myself shots without a shrug and in the past have cheerfully punctured my horses’ jugular veins to get a Coggins sample.

The appointment was at 8am and our drive is just long enough that I was out the door bright and early. The sun was shining and as I loaded Arden into the car the air was just buzzing.

    Car doors slamming, birds singing…..

    And then it hit me.

If you’ve lived in New England what I’m about to say will make sense.

Winter here is quiet. Beyond the cold when you walk out the door the first thing, even living in a city like we do, you just are aware that the air around you is still. Sounds like a car engine vibrate off the sidewalk and migrate through you.

Some people say Winter is dead… I feel more like everything is asleep.

Then one morning you wake up and even though the air is still icy on your cheeks and the grass brown and hidden under patches of snow, the world is awash with sound.

Birds clamoring, people walking by, children running to the bus, a million shards of sound combining into the din of life. You have to pay attention to discern what is making each noise

    Spring is finally here!

Sure another snow storm may wallop us next weekend but the change is here.

    Arden’s first spring.

I can’t wait to finally get outdoors and explore it with her.

Parks, camping, HRC Family Events, Pride….

We have so much to do together and I can’t wait to start!

You know you're a mother when...

You put your hand in your coat pocket and feel something damp...and pull out the baby wipe you were using to remove snot from your child's face.

We're into a new sport in our house.

    It's called "Twist and Change"

    There are two participants.

One is a 6 month old baby

The other is an aged adult.

The objective: To diaper and re-clothe said 6 month old.

The rules: None. Everything goes. Extra points for getting Destin all over oneself.

The scoring system: Undetermined unless there is someone who can translate 6 month old babble.

Current team standings: Baby- 3,000 Adults- 1 (and she was half asleep for that one)
